Week 3 : Reflections (3 questions)

a) Did the course (you have chosen) incorporate the use of computer in the teaching and learning?

The linguistic course that we have chosen is Phonetics and Phonology. Yes, it incorporates the use of computer in teaching and learning as it work both ways; the lecturers will use the computer and the projector (if provided) to teach the students by presenting slides and such, meanwhile, the students would respond by using the computers and etc.

b) Are the computer-based activities related to any of 3 of the stages of CALL?

The computer-based activities in the Phonetics and Phonology class are related to the three stages of CALL. The computer works as a mechanical tutor (Behaviorist CALL), a stimulus (communicative CALL), and lastly, as a tool (Integrative CALL)

Yes, there are plenty of computer-based activities related to any of 3 of the stages of CALL such as looking for sound production via Youtube; one of video-sharing websites on which users can upload, share, and view videos. One could always use the internet for any future references as to help him/her in the field of teaching or learning. Apart from that, one could do practices; lots of drills, to improve one's skills. Complete set of IPA symbols could be found via internet as well.

c) What are the important concepts in 3 stages related to the activities?

  • Computer as a mechanical tutor
The computer and projector (if provided) are the tutor as they would show the lecturer's power point slide, pictures (i.e vocal track diagram), charts (i.e IPA chart), and videos in the classroom. The computer becomes the tutor as one would repeat after it, listen to the sound articulation and so much more.
  • Computer as a stimulus
The computer is needed to trigger students' skill whenever they are asked to used the computer to respond to the work that is given by the lecturer.
  • Computer as a tool
The computer is used as a tool to collect data. It is also the resource of info for the privilege of students.
