In the previous lecture, Madam Rozina has explained to us about CALL in language skills, which are, listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar ( LSRWG ), and how one could improve their skills by using technological resources. Before we pin point those skills, we would summarize what we have learned in the previous class.

Briefly, Madam Rozina has explained to us what are the skills and some areas of the skills. For example, perception, analytic, and synthesis skill fall under listening skill. Some areas of speaking skill are mechanics, which involves pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, functions, which means knowing when clarity of message is essential and when precise understanding is not required, and also social and cultural rules and norms, which means turn-taking, rate of speech, and many more. Madam Rozina has also explained and told us about some of the areas of the other skills. In addition, she has also enlightened us on how CALL can develop those skills. For example, using email and discussion boards could improve one’s fluency on the language. Reading and highlighting words in a text on the screen influences the amount of vocabulary incidentally learned by the reader.

CALL has been proven by the linguists to improve one’s LSRWG skills. We think that CALL has given so much help to people in improving those skills. It is also easier to access and it’s everywhere. For example, it has been proven that one can improve their listening skill by watching movies. There are also many website that provided questions and activities related to those skills. For example, on the internet, we can see there are so many website related to grammar skill. We can just enter the website and answer the questions provided. No payment needed. All you need a computer and wireless connection. That’s it.

Other question that is important to be answered. Why is it that it is very important for these skills to be improved, or enhanced? It is important for these skills to be good, especially for students majoring in English, like us. Using CALL is quite an unorthodox way, a good way of course for people to learn English. People would also have higher respect for a skilled English user. It is also important for people to have a good grasp of the English language as it is the universal language. It is used by everyone, and everywhere in this world. When you apply for a job, the interviewer needs to see how good you are in those skills, especially speaking, writing skill and also grammar. Using Microsoft word, Microsoft Powerpoint, and other software is a basic skill to apply for a job. This shows how CALL and English language complements each other when applying for a job.

To conclude, we think that CALL has given so many benefits to English users who want to develop their skills. It is easier to use, access, and its everywhere. It is also important for people to improve their skills as those skills are required whenever and wherever you go, and whoever you meet.
